Merritt Kennedy

Merritt arrived Friday, February 15th.
I hope you enjoy the picture story.  I am writing her birth story (detailed) so I can remember it.  Maybe I'll post it one day too.

James Island Lights

James Island Lights-in a nut shell.  Light show much like Tanglewood.  The night was very pleasant which allowed us to ride the carousel and even wait in a long line for Santa.  Once again Lawson wanted to ride the horse.  While he may not look so happy here  it's just the flash.  He loved every minute of it and didn't want to leave when it was over.  Of course, it goes without saying Davis enjoyed her time too.  We wondered if Mary Poppins would arrive and let us take the horse for a spin though.
We waited for a while to visit Santa.  Santa isn't promoted in our home but I'll just leave it there.  Lawson, again, throws us a curve ball.  Why would this child even get near Santa when he dislikes mascots like the Christmas Light we saw while we were waiting in line to see Santa...animals (stuffed or alive), large non-human objects.  Yup, climbs right on his lap and starts talking.  Who is this guy?

I should insert here, just so I remember, Darrell is in Charleston now.  He had a meeting Wednesday morning and will be working here the rest of the week.  Thank you technology and Shannon aka the boss man.

A Carriage Ride

Can you visit Charleston and not experience a carriage ride?  I think not.  And I have to say that Lawson completely agrees.  The same child who dislikes any mascot and animals (stuffed or alive) LOVED the horses.  Sunday while we were walking to the parade I met a new side of this child.  My happy-go-lucky child turned into a screaming, "I wanna ride da horses" little boy.
Picture this, mixed-use development (aka you can hear a pin drop) walking from The Battery to King Street.  A Mommy toting a 23 month old in an Ergo.  A happy 4.5 year old skipping along side her mommy.  Oh a horse and carriage with a few passengers.  Let's stop and take a look at this.  Okay, we've seen all we can see let's continue to the parade.  Child in ergo, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!  I wanna ride da horses!!"  screams x30 times...very, very loudly while reaching back towards the horse!
Fast forward 45 minutes-
At the parade wouldn't you know that Wells Fargo has their Stagecoach make an appearance.  This time Lawson starts walking down the street after it.  When I won't let him go any further he starts his shenanigans again.  Thankfully there weren't many people around to witness his behavior.  :)  Nor did we pass any horses on the walk back to The Battery (thankfully).

One happy guy with his horse!

Couldn't resist this vine covered wall near Market Street.  I guess they're sharing secrets from the ride...

Angel Oak Tree

A short drive down a scenic road we came to the little park where this well established tree lives.  The Angel Oak Tree. (Just for random fun-I found this interesting and amusing, plus a part of me wanted to join in but then I quickly changed my mind or did I?!?!?)
Anyway I digress.
I have to admit when I saw it from the road I thought "big deal".  It wasn't until I really stood back and looked at the tree that I realized its size.  My photographs certainly do not caputre the beauty and grandeur of the tree.  It is something you just have to put eyes on.

There are cables helping branches, 4x4s and metal beams supporting limbs.  Quite impressive once you are under her branches.

We certainly enjoyed our time there.  The park, if one can call it that, also has picnic tables, a small gift store (we didn't go in) and porta-potties (Nature's Call, if I remember the company correctly-that we didn't use).  The grounds in front of the Angel Oak Tree:  open with a few large pine trees otherwise fit for running about chasing butterflies which is just what my children did.    Of course, what is any trip without a snack?  Crumbly donut muffins were the snack of the day!  No crumbs allowed inside the automobile please.

Folly Beach

We have some special friends that moved to Charleston late summer.  Too bad they're in Disney we are having to house sit.  I know, it is awful on both accounts Mickey for them and history/beach for us.  I guess we'll survive though.

Yesterday was gorgeous.  I mean mid 70s and no wind.  Perfect for us to spend the greater part of the morning and afternoon in the sand.  To have a beach all to yourself at 4 and 1 is pretty fun stuff.  We would occasionally have the beach stroller/dog walker come by but for the most part it was just us.  I loved it.  No crowds for your children to get lost in.  The water cool enough that I didn't let Davis "play" in it.  Don't get me wrong she was in it a lot but no 'wave' catching allowed.   Lawson had his fair share of water action too but he wasn't in quite as much as his sister.
I enjoyed myself by just sitting and watching the children play, run and roll around.

Please notice the SAND is everywhere!

Rolling, literally, in the sand (covered top to bottom)
